Sarawak Laksa - Ah Yu’s Stall

img_0054

This is the very famous stall which started from Bormill Estate.  The owner’s wife was interviewed by Ah Hung (Taiwan Chef) and featured on Astro sometime back. Apart from that, this stall has also been featured on other local food channels. They have now branched out to a stall in Sekama and another in Hui Sing. The Bormill stall has moved to this new coffee shop at Tabuan Laru, called “Tien Chen“, which is located just opposite Tan Sri  Ting Pek Khiing’s house.

I had a short interview session with the Tau Keh Nio (woman boss) who runs the stall and she told us that she started her stall in 1996. That’s more than 13 years’ track record and they are still running strong despite the competitions. As you can clearly see from the picture above, a regular bowl cost $4 and large/special cost $5 per bowl. My rating is 4 out of 5.

Apart from Ah Yu Laksa, there are other stalls like Kolo Mee, Mee Sua, Seafood Mee and a Seafood Stall which operates at night.

Nyonya Yam Cake Recipe

Sorry for the one month’s absence. I have not enjoyed or tried any dishes that was worth posting about, thus, the reason for the lack of post. Anyway, today I would like to share with you our local favourite cake, The Nyonya Yam Cake Recipe. It was my mom’s first attempt and the result was pretty good, if I may say so. Take a look for yourself!

Right side is what it looks like before garnishing is added

Ingredients

Part 1

400 g diced yam

4 tablespoon oil

Part 2

3 cups of water

200 g rice flour

5 g tapioca flour

Add salt, pepper, five spice powder, sugar according to taste

For Garnishing

Dried shrimps, minced garlic, oil, diced red chilli, fried shallot and diced spring onion (which we ran out of and did not include it)

Methods

1. Fragrant diced yam with oil, add in ingredients Part 1 and keep on stirring until mixture thickens. Pour everything into baking pan and steamed for 20 minutes.

2. Fragrant dried shrimps with minced garlic and then mixed with the rest of the garnishing ingredients. Sprinkle on top of yam cake. That’s all there is to it.
